Each participant will study a 5,000-square-foot site on the Franklin Parker Preserve (Burlington County.) Participants may work alone or with a partner. There will be 9 monthly workshop sessions at PPA headquarters.The goal is to create a complete, specimen-based list of all vascular plant species on the site. The course fee is $150 to be paid in advance to carol@njconservation.org. Registration is limited to 30 people.
The James C. Rutherford Jr. Scholarship is available to qualifying registrants. The scholarship was established with contributions made to Pinelands Preservation Alliance in memory of Jim Rutherford, a local biologist who was an enthusiastic student of all phases of Pine Barrens ecology, an ardent conservationist, and an attendee of the Special Pinelands Plants courses of 2005, 2006, and 2007.
Scholarship applications should be sent to Becky Free, Pinelands Preservation Alliance, 17 Pemberton Rd., Southampton, NJ 08088. The application letter should include name, address, phone and email, and an explanation of why you wish to participate and how it will benefit your career or studies. Include resume. Deadline for scholarships is May 1, 2012.

Looking for fun and an educational night under the stars? Please join New Jersey Conservation Foundation and the Willingboro Astronomical Society at the Franklin Parker Preserve in Chatsworth, Burlington County, for our annual Spring Star Party. The night time sky offers an incredible and diverse array of wonders that fill the dark skies of the Pine Barrens. We may see the Ghost of Jupter, Double Stars, numberous Clusters to mention a few. The astronomers will also give a lazer show during the evening.
We will meet at the Lake Entrance on Route 532. Directions are on our website under "Our Preserves/Franklin Parker Preserve."

“Fundamentals of Pinelands Field Botany and Vegetation Communities,” a joint program of New Jersey Conservation Foundation and Pinelands Preservation Alliance, will be offered as a 10-week course this summer.
Using popular field guides and technical manuals, the course will focus on how to identify plants in the wild. Special attention will be paid to rarities. Participants will also learn to recognize the major vegetation communities of the Pinelands. The class will also discuss the protection measures that are in effect for the rarities of the region.
The James C. Rutherford Jr. Scholarship is available to two qualifying registrants. The scholarship was established with contributions made to the Pinelands Preservation Alliance (PPA) in memory of Jim Rutherford, a local biologist who was an enthusiastic student of all phases of Pine Barrens ecology, an ardent conservationist, and a participant in PPA’s Special Pinelands Plants Courses of 2005, 2006, and 2007.

Explore the crannies and rocks along the Cooper River with Urban Trekkers Boatworks and New Jersey Conservation Foundation. You may see cormorants, kingfishers, herons and possibly a bald eagle!
The scheduled time of arrival for boat launching for the river trip is 11:15 am. Participants must bring their own canoe or kayak and life jacket, and be capable of carrying their own boat as the portage is difficult. Please, no inflatable boats!
There will be a ceremony prior to the event at 8:30 am to celebrate the launching of boats built by the Urban Trekkers. All participants are invited.
Closed-toe shoes and life jackets are required. Pack water, sunscreen, hat and a snack. Directions to the launching location will be given once the $10 fee per person and waiver have been received.
Limited to 15 canoes or kayaks.

New Jersey Conservation Foundation and Pinelands Preservation Alliance join together to bring you this 6-mile Red Trail at the Franklin Parker Preserve. The trail is primarily a footpath through the woods, but portions of it coincide with dike and service roads, which allows hikers to see the many and diverse features of the Preserve. It provides access to Cedar Swamps and Hardwood Swamps, and traverses Pitch Pine Lowlands and Pine/Scrub Oak Forests. The pace will be leisurely, with plenty of stops along the way. Pack a lunch and plenty of water. The hike will be led by Russell Juelg, New Jersey Conservation Foundation's Land Steward-Pine Barrens Education.

On warm, humid nights in the early summer, the iconic treefrogs of the Pine Barrens gather at ponds for their annual mating ritual. We’ll visit one or more of these ponds and listen for and hopefully get up close and intimate with these beautiful creatures. Bring a flashlight and meet us at the North Gate (Lake Entrance)to the Franklin Parker Preserve. We will carpool and caravan from there. Blaine Rothauser, nature photographer and biologist, will lead this walk through the meadows of Bamboo Brook Outdoor Education Center in Chester Township, Morris County. There are beautiful flowering trees and flowers in our formal gardens as well as the surrounding area. Common milkweed, butterfly weed, and wild bergamot are plants that folks will likely see in June. Magnifying glasses may be a help in identifying some of the smaller creatures, and of course, a camera to capture the beauty of early summer.

This is a joint hike with New Jersey Conservation Foundation and Pinelands Preservation Alliance on the Franklin Parker Preserve in Chatsworth.
