The course will consist of ten evening classroom sessions and ten weekend field trips. The classroom sessions will take place every Thursday at the Pinelands Preservation Alliance's office in Pemberton starting May 30th and continue through August 8th (with the exception of July 4th. All day (9AM - 3PM) field trips will take place at the Franklin Parker Preserve in Chatsworth on the following dates: June 2, 8, 16, 22, 30; July 13, 21, 27; Aug 4, 10.
In this course, we will not only sharpen identification skills but discuss why we might want to positively identify any of the hundreds of plants growing wild in the New Jersey Pine Barrens. In recreational field botany, we typically pay scant attention to the utility of plants, deriving pleasure simply from the thrill of learning, and an appreciation of their beauty and mysteries. But a surprising number of Pinelands plants have practical value to us, as the early inhabitants of the land were quite aware. Many are edible, or at least produce edible parts, and an even larger number have medicinal properties. Others are useful in construction or other crafts, or provide choice firewood. We will study live and pressed specimens during ten evening workshops, and make ten weekend field trips. We will pay close attention to plants and plant communities that are of conservation priority. Students will need a copy of Guide to Flowering Plant Families, by Wendy Zomlefer, a 10X hand lens, and a field notebook. A list of additional recommended reference material will be sent to registrants. For the field trips, students will need a plant identification field manual and an illustrated glossary of botanical terms (see recommended material), a field notebook, and a 10X hand lens. $150 per person.
