Candace M. Ashmun, Consultant
Mrs. Ashmun started her career as physicist in an industrial
chemistry laboratory in Bernardsville NJ. After three years
she turned her attention to part time teaching and started
covering local municipal meetings for the local newspaper.
That experience led to an interest in the legal workings of
government. She moved then to become a research director for
the Upper Raritan Watershed Association. In 1975 she was recruited
by the Association of New Jersey Environmental Commissions
to be their first full time Executive Director. In 1979 she
was appointed by Governor Byrne to the unsalaried position
of New Jersey Pinelands Commissioner and has served there
since that time, having been re- appointed by five Governors
including Governor McGreevey. In 1989 she was appointed to
the State Planning Commission and served there during the
adoption of the first State Development and Redevelopment
Plan in 1992 Candy has served on Planning Boards, Board of
Adjustment and Board of Education in Bedminster and Far Hills.
She has been a consultant to the non-profit environmental
community since 1982, and has convened the monthly New Jersey
Environmental Summit since 1982. Mrs. Ashmun is a graduate
of Smith College with a degree in Physics and minors in Philosophy
and Government. Her awards include National Citizen Planner
of the Year from the American Planning Association and the
Smith College Medal as well as numerous statewide honors.
