Black River Greenway
The
Black River Greenway is a region that includes parts of Hunterdon,
Morris and Somerset counties. NJCF and its conservation partners
have preserved nearly 3,000 acres of land throughout the area,
which is characterized by rolling open farms and dramatic
dark forests, for both public access and the protection of
environmentally sensitive resources.
This 180-square mile area is named after the Black River
(also known as the Lamington River) a tributary of the North
Branch of the Raritan River. Holding some of the largest open
spaces in the stretch between Manhattan and Philadelphia,
the Black River Greenway faces tremendous development pressure.
NJCF and local land conservation groups, municipalities and
counties in The Black River Greenway are partnering to identify
and protect lands vital to our future.
Saving The Black River Greenway
NJCF and conservation partners have responded
to environmental concerns and development pressures
facing the region by preserving nearly 3,000 acres over
the last 40 years. Most recently, NJCF has helped preserve:
- 78 acres along Black River Road in Bedminster,
including more than a mile of Lamington River frontage
- 72 acres connecting Burnt Mills Park to River Road
Park in Bedminster Township
- 14 acres along the Chambers Brook in Bedminster
Township
- 10 acres along Palatine Road in Tewksbury

In the immediate future, NJCF plans to protect nearly 600
acres of farmland through partnerships and a 200-acre forested
tract identified through NJCF’s Garden State Greenways
initiative.
